Leaf size

Depending on the size of the leaves, teas can be sorted in the following categories: leafy teas, broken teas and grist. The former ones are offered for sale mainly in bags or boxes and their boiling time is a little longer
(6-8 minutes), while the grist is packaged in filter bags, and takes a shorter time (3-4 minutes) to boil.

Leafy teas
  • Flowery Orange Pekoe (FOP): tea obtained from the stems and the uppermost leaves
  • Orange Pekoe (OP): tea made of the first unfolded leave, a little bigger than FOP.
  • Pekoe: tea made of the shorter leaves than OP
  • Souchong: tea obtained from large leaves

Broken teas
Broken teas are produced by rolling the still green leaves. The leaves broken during the rolling process are grouped according to their species.

  • Flowery Broken Orange Pekoe (FBOP): strong and aromtic tea from Sri Lanka or Nothern India.
  • Broken Orange Pekoe (BOP): one of the most common broken tea, tea with a strong taste.
  • Broken Tea (BK): can be compared with BOP, but the leaves are less long

Tea grist (fannings)
Tea grist is the most frequently consumed tea brand. It is consisted of minute bits obtained from leaves. Tea grist releases its taste and colour quickly, so it can be most adequately packaged in filter bags.

  • Broken Orange Pekoen Fannings (BOPF) and Orange Fannings (OF): tea with a fine structure
  • Pekoe Fannings (PF): slightly smaller leaf than BOP, the smallest leaf that is
    used in our teabag range
  • Pekoe Dust (PD) and Dust (D): very fine tea, with a strong and aromtic taste
